Declaration of Sustainable Development Goals
by NPO STEM Career Path Project for Girls (GSTEM-CPP) (May 2022)

This organization endorses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) proposed by the United Nations and is committed to proactively working toward the realization of a sustainable society.

(1) Eliminate gender disparities in education.
(2)Promote women’s empowerment and gender equality.
(3)Encourage effective public, public–private, and civil society partnerships.

Based on the SDGs 4, 5, and 17, we will collaborate with various academic associations, companies, and other organizations from the global perspective to achieve the abovementioned targets. With the support of more than 40 academic associations and companies, we offer a training program entitled the “Summer School for Junior and Senior High School Girls: Encounters with Science, Technology, and People,” which will be conducted on a nationwide scale every year.

Current Situation in Japan as Background

The percentage of female students in science and engineering departments at Japanese universities reaches 28% and 16%, respectively (Basic School Statistics 2020). The figure is the lowest among 38 OECD countries. Scholars have pointed out that the fascination and appeal offered by science and engineering in terms of working in this field are only partially conveyed to female students. The reason may be partially due to an unconscious bias. In addition, a lack of understanding continues to exist among female junior and senior high school students and their parents and teachers.
